The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed a camp near the town of Callao, north of Great Basin Park. From their base of operations in the camp, CCC workers constructed a road over Sand Pass, erosion terraces, campgrounds, fences, and reservoirs.

The easiest approach to the Deeps is via Interstate 80 and Wendover. Drive south from Wendover toward the town of Ibapah and turn off on the Pony Express road to towards Callao. Just less than a mile before Callao take a right onto Snake Valley Road. The CCC camp will be 4 miles further south.
